Use video game feedback style to motivate team

The way video games offer immediate feedback on performance should be replicated in the workplace, it has been claimed.

Business Insider blogger Mark Fidelman cited the work of academic Michael Wu in recommending this style of management, which gives staff enough autonomy to make choices and then lets them know how well they performed at various points in reference to the overall goal.

Mr Fidelman suggested that executives in programme manager jobs and other senior positions would need to keep detailed analysis on each employee to make it work, but claimed it can be a very successful motivation technique.

"You need to show an employee's progress and give them rapid feedback. Typically this requires tracking and analytics. You need to track everything they do that's relevant to their job," Mr Wu was quoted as saying.

This is one of five motivation strategies recommended by the management expert; the other four were making sure employees are in the correct positions, gamifying training, valuing the differences between technology choices and rewarding failure but always expecting better results.

The importance of other factors aside from money is a common theme among many management commentators, with Forbes contributor Martin Zwilling opining that such influences can be more effective motivators in the long-term.

In terms of how to get the best of a team, Mr Zwilling encouraged managers to work hard on communication techniques, make sure people always come first and lead through experience or competence, rather than solely via an official position.
