Helping motivate staff through Blue Monday

There are several steps managers can take to alleviate the depression associated with today, which has been nicknamed 'Blue Monday'.

Reportedly the most depressing day of the entire year, Blue Monday is something employers must face every year; finding extra ways to keep their staff motivated.

However Francis Goss, head of Grass Roots (an employee engagement specialist), has given his top tips on beating the blues - starting with sharing the company-wide objectives with employees.

Writing for HR Magazine, he advised: "Do you know what you want to achieve this year? Do your colleagues share that vision and do they know how important their role is in achieving it? Set team goals and rewards to focus the team and provide a common direction." This might be particularly pertinent to those in project manager jobs hoping to motivate their staff towards the end goal.

Goss went on to suggest delegating duties to give staff a chance to shine, spending time with the team and building a strong rapport with those being led by the manager. "Find out what really charges their batteries - outside of work - and take a genuine interest," he said.

However getting through Blue Monday is something employees need to help themselves do too, without simply relying on their managers. Mirror.co.uk suggested heading outside for some sunshine and sitting next to a window at work, if possible.

This can help increase the levels of light received by the body and in turn, help improve a person's overall mood.
